“White Stuff” eroding trust in planning

One of the founders of clothing and accessories brand “White Stuff” is raising temperatures amongst some of the locals in Salcombe.

Sean Thomas built a garage, tennis court and skate park at his luxury riverside home without planning permission.

South Hams District Council ordered him to remove the offending works and restore the land to its former condition having refused a retrospective application for planning permission.

However, Mr Thomas has not removed the buildings and the Council has taken no formal action to make him, although “discussions are continuing”.

Conservation charity The South Hams Society says the Council’s failure to act would “send the wrong message” and erode confidence in the planning system.

The buildings were described be West Alvington Parish Council as an “eyesore” in a “unique and iconic landscape”.

The parish council said, “The overall impression is that the owners have no respect for either the landscape in which they are privileged to live, or the law.”
