Exeter Planning is pleased to announce that on 30 October East Devon District Council granted planning permission to Overington Care Ltd to change the use of the town’s currently vacant former Woolworth store to a “hub” for elderly and isolated people in the community.
Overington Care provides domiciliary support in East Devon enabling the elderly to remain in their own homes for as long as possible rather than going into residential care, and the new facility will provide a facility for them to “pop in” for a cup of tea and a chat to relieve the isolation that many can experience.
The hub will also include a shop selling mobility and similar aid to independent living and include a meeting space where other activities will be organised by volunteers.
The change of use of a former retail unit in the defined “primary shopping area” is a recognition that the nature of High Streets is moving away from being primarily retail focused and towards a more mixed character.
